What's the deal with the rules?

First off, I ask that only people with webpages who know how to place images on their pages and link them apply. I would truly love to be able to educate everyone on how to do this, but my time is very limited and I am unable to help with this. I also ask that people put their pets, once adopted, onto their own servers rather than stealing my bandwidth. This agency takes a lot as is and is difficult to run because of that. I also ask that people link their pets back to the agency so that other people can find and adopt my pets and so that they don't lose their magical powers. Anyone who does not link their pets back here is a cybernapper and will have cyber dragons sicced on them. I ask that you link to this page here:

http://www.jade-leaves.com/

so that people will come in the front door. Typically the code one would use to link an image (like your adopted pet!) back to this agency would be like so:

<a href="http://www.jade-leaves.com/"><img src="petname.gif" alt="Ginkgo's Cyber Pet Adoption Agency" border=0></a>

You can cut and paste that code into your page after you save your pet off one of the adoption pages, change "petname.gif" to whatever the file name is, and if you put your pet into an image directory, also include the directory it is in, for instance "images/petname.gif".

And finally, although it's not absolutely required, I ask that everyone go and sign the adoption register or fill in one of the adoption forms on the adoption pages so that I'll know where all my pets are going to live and so that my other pets can go visiting their old friends. (I've put a lot of work into these pets and it makes me really happy to be able to see them adopted on other people's pages.) Signing the register is also a great way for you to get new visitors to your site, so it's good for everyone.

I still don't understand--how do I link a pet to you?

Well, first off, "linking a pet back to me" means that the image of your pet is linked, just like a text link works. One puts the
<a href="http://www.jade-leaves.com/"> code in front of the img tag (<img src="petname.gif" alt="Ginkgo's Cyber Pet Adoption Agency" border=0> for instance) and then ends the link with </a>. The important thing to know is that if one puts border=0 inside of the img tag, the nasty link box will go away. Take a look at the following two linked pets:

Oh no! This one was not done properly so it has an ugly box around it.

This looks much better! Putting border=0 in the image tag got rid of the ugly box!
The top mouse did not have border=0 in its img tag and so you see a box around it. Many people don't use images as links because they don't like these boxes and don't know how to get rid of them. But the second mouse does not have a box around it because it did use border=0 in its img tag. So you see now how easy it is to link your pet back, and that it will look great, too.

Hey, you forgot to put your email link up!

Actually, to be perfectly honest, I didn't forget. I did that on purpose. Too many people don't read the rules and send me letters asking, "How do I put a pet on my page?" It either eats up all my time to answer these letters, or it breaks my heart to ignore them even though I've stated quite clearly that I can't answer them. So I've decided to make it a little harder for these people who don't pay attention to write to me. The rest of you can either sign my guestbook or go check out the rest of my site, Ginkgo's Pile of Leaves, to find a mailto link. I didn't do this to be mean or anything, it's just that my mail has been out of control and I can't seem to do anything about people who refuse to pay attention and who won't read the rules. Believe me, I'd be glad to get a letter from you. (Just please don't ask me how to ftp an image to your own server--that's what your provider's tech support is for. *smile*)

Still have more questions?

There are some very good FAQ pages out there by other people. You can start by visiting Bear Jests' CyberPet Netiquette page which has a lot of information on cyber pets and may have the answer you're looking for. If you have questions about HTML, check out Tim's excellent Designing a Web Page. Tim's page is full of both practical information and also links to some of the best FAQ's out there. Since he's done such a great job, I'm just going to send you all over there. (Tim's one of my best friends and we used to go surfing together to learn how to do stuff when he was first writing his page, so I can vouch for the quality of it. And he's the one who first started me off in HTML.)
