Lantern Butterfly
The Lantern Butterly is likely the most spectacular of Maya's butterflies. It is a nocturnal traveller that inhabits mountainous regions throughout the planet, and there are many variants. The most common is the Blue Lantern Butterfly which inhabits all continents. Any species though can easily be found at night since it radiates a pleasant glow from its wings as it flies. This glow, though, becomes a blinding flash whenever a predator is near, though, or when mating season arrives and the mountainsides light up like fireworks displays. |

Dawn Lantern Butterfly This subspecies was found along the Tzencotl River valley. It seemed to only appear a few minutes before the first hint of dawn, hence the name. Although it is noticably dimmer than the Blue Lantern, it in fact blazes brightly in ultraviolet, indicating that a local predator likely hunts by those wavelengths. |

Snow Lantern Butterfly This subspecies was found high atop the Kaftosten Volcano, near the arctic circle of Maya. A great deal of flora exists along side the five glaciers that flow down its mountainsides. These butterflies always stayed near the glaciers, staying at nights in its crevasses. |
