There are twelve signs in the Chinese zodiac, and five elements: Metal, Earth, Fire, Water, and Wood.   Details about how each element influences the different zodiac signs will be on the Chinese zodiac pages I'm working on right now.   When I've got a beta page finished for the Rat, I'll put the link here so you can read more detailed information about Rats and about how the different elements modify their personalities.

Here's a basic Chinese-restaurant-place-mat type of description for Rats:

"You are ambitious yet honest. Prone to spend freely. Seldom make lasting friendships. You are charming, aggressive and a great joiner and party-goer. However opportunistic you can be generous to loved ones. Most compatible with Dragons and Monkeys. Least compatible with Horses. "

1997 is the Year of the Ox, here's how Rats are expected to fare in 1997, according to Theodora Lau's book, The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes:

"A fairly good year.   The Rat's gains will not be substantial but it will still be a bright and happy time for his family and he will benefit indirectly from the good fortune of others.   He could find stress in his work area and more responsibilities than usual."
